Ammonium Removal

An experiment was carried out on a nitrifying bio-filter with a zeolite-containing Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA®) filter media and this resulted in a daily accumulation of ammonia from the waste water being treated.

  • The Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA®) filter removed ammonium from domestic wastewater by absorption of ammonium and a combination of nitrification.
  • This Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA®)  filter can be biologically regenerated continuously without any deterioration in the work-ability after some months of continuous experiments.
  • It was indicated that adsorption of ammonium from Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA®)  was basically caused by an exchange of Cations from wastewater at low concentration.
