Why is ECA ® or expanded clay aggregate used for compensated foundations ?

Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA ®) can be used to help strengthen the ground below an existing foundation, using an equivalent volume of expanded clay. ECA ® has a much lower density compared to soil, which helps reduce the overall weight of the building and compensate for the loads that a new building will impose on the soil. Compensated foundations are often used when a building is demolished and replaced with a larger, heavier building, and can help save money on construction by mitigating the need to remove and rebuild a foundation entirely. ECA ® also is extremely strong, and will not settle, and it is resistant to moisture, with stellar drainage properties.
