For the 1st time in INDIA, Rivashaa Eco Design Solutions introduces a MAKE IN INDIA Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) manufactured by our group company.

Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) is 100% Natural and Sustainable Inert aggregate. It is reusable multiple times and does not decompose or disintegrate over time. Further, one would save up to 50-60 %  on watering costs for larger landscapes if Expanded Clay Aggregate is used correct proportions.

ECA® is the right product for creating lightweight fill or lightened draining layers for landscaping and other permaculture applications other than its versatile application in the construction field.

The applications are as follows:

  • Landscaping
  • Urban Trees
  • Floriculture
  • Green Roofs/ Roof Gardens
  • Agriculture
  • Organic Farming
  • Horticulture / Plants In Greenhouse Containers
  • Tissue Culture
  • Production Nurseries
  • Lawns and Turfs
  • Lightweight Podium Landscapes
  • Sports Field and Playgrounds
  • Highway side plantations
  • Flower Beds
  • Planters
  • Flower Pots, Plants & Trees
  • Top Dressing & Mulch Patio
  • Hydroponics & Aquaponics
  • Lightweight Vertical Gardens, Terrace Roof Gardens
  • Transplantations, Nurseries, Greenhouse, and all Permaculture applications.

The porous, cellular nature of Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) helps manage air, water, and solid particulate matter. It reduces compaction, increases the soil porosity, and maintains the soil temperature.  The gaps between the pellets provide good aeration for root systems. The use of expanded clay as a soil amendment is ideal for increasing oxygen in the soil, which promotes vigorous plant growth. When mixed into heavy soil, expanded clay improves the soil’s aeration potential and also increases drainage.

Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA), limits excessive water retention and enhances drainage, which is an essential factor for the proper growth of roots and plants. Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) does not release any salinity and does not change the pH factor of the mixture. ECA is inhospitable to bugs, gnats, termites, pests, insects, and other germs. ECA doesn’t give room for weeds to grow hence helps save us losing on crop yields. You can use crushed ECA to increase water retention for use in the germination stage of growing. Expanded Clay Aggregates are inexpensive and can save you money reusing them over the years. ECA has a high Cation exchange capacity (CEC) value which influences the soil's ability to hold onto essential nutrients and provides a buffer against soil acidification.

Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) does not change or decompose in time or due to humidity; it is even spread as a top dressing on the pots/vases for aesthetics and dust prevention.

Hydroponics: Expanded or Expandable Clay Aggregate (ECA) is a commonly used hydroponic growing medium. It is a lightweight aggregate that is heated in a kiln oven to a temperature of 2,910 degrees Fahrenheit (1,200 degrees Celsius). Once the aggregate is heated, it releases gases, which create small bubbles that make a honeycomb-like structure inside of the aggregate. The movement of the kiln makes the aggregate form into a round shape. The round shapes of expandable clay vary in size. Expandable clay has become a popular growing medium in hydroponics and aquaponics because it secures roots and retains water. The clay has a neutral pH, which also makes mold and fungus less likely to grow.

Benefits of Expanded Clay Aggregates for Hydroponics and Aquaponics:

  • These porous Expanded Clay Aggregates absorb moisture and allow for fantastic drainage of water from the roots of the plant.
  • Not only do they absorb moisture, but they’ll also absorb any nutrient solution you choose to add.
  • The pores in the aggregates, the space between them, and their superior drainage function keeps air circulating, so roots get plenty of oxygen.
  • They can last a long time. Just wash and reuse as many times as you need. You don’t have to worry about losing nutrients through numerous washes because there aren’t any, to begin with. If they lose their usefulness, you can add them to the soil of your outdoor gardens to increase aeration and organic content.
  • They’re pH safe and rather inhospitable to bugs.
  • You can crush them to increase water retention for use in the germination stage of growing. ( We also supply crushed Expanded Clay Aggregates)
  • They’re inexpensive since they are cheap to make and can save you money reusing them over the years.

Expanded clay is also sometimes called Hydroton, clay pebbles, lightly expanded clay aggregate, or simple clay. It resembles a brown pebble. The growing medium can be rinsed and reused, making it a popular, economical choice. It's often paired with net pots or mesh pots, which hold the medium neatly in the system.
